As we approach Holy Week, here is what is making news in our parish:

1THIS WEEKEND  AT ST. MARY:
  • Saturday, April 12: Screening of the documentary "Fambul Tok" at 6 pm in St. Joseph Hall
  • Sunday, April 13: Palm Sunday. Service begins at 10 am in the plaza. Procession to Watseka and Regent and return to the church.
2.    LENT AT ST. MARY: 
  • Weekday: Morning Prayer at 8:45 am; Mass at 9 am
  • EVENSONG at 6 pm on FRIDAYS
  • Stations (Way) of the Cross at 6:30 pm on FRIDAYS   
3. HOLY WEEK AT ST. MARY:
  • Tuesday, April 15: Renewal of Ordination Vows, Cathedral Center, 840 Echo Park Ave, Los Angeles at 11 am. All are welcome.
  • Thursday, April 17: 
    • Maundy Thursday Proper Liturgy at 7 pm including foot-washing and vigil before the reserved Sacrament.

    5.   PALMS EMERGENCY  PREPAREDNESS PROJECT:
    • You have heard about the many earthquakes in So California in recent days, now join us in preparing our community for any emergency. Let your own emergency plan include the safety of your neighbors and community. Talk to Fr. Vincent after Mass or send him an email. 
    6.  TRADING LAWN FOR DROUGHT TOLERANT PLANTS
    • We got approval March 20, from the LADWP to proceed with replacing the lawn in our parkway - 3200 sq. ft of space - with drought tolerant plants.
    • We are currently working on the plan (sketches) for re-planting the parkway. Plans will be completed before Easter and work done soon after we get final approval.
    7.  CHRISTIAN EDUCATION CLASSES AT ST. MARY:
    • May 4, 11, 25:  Anglo-Catholicism
    • June 1, 8, 22, 29:  Church and Music
    • July: on vacation.
    • August: visits to holy sites in Los Angeles.

    Parish UPDATE: April 6

    Here is what is making news in our parish:

    1THIS WEEKEND  AT ST. MARY:
    • Saturday, April 5: Screening of the movie "12 Years a Slave" at 6 pm in St. Joseph Hall
    • Sunday, April 6: Fifth Sunday in Lent. Rehearsal of "Harrowing of Hell" after Mass

    2.    LENT AT ST. MARY: 
    • Weekday: Morning Prayer at 8:45 am; Mass at 9 am
    • EVENSONG at 6 pm on FRIDAYS
    • Stations (Way) of the Cross at 6:30 pm on FRIDAYS   

    3.    LENTEN/COMMUNITY MOVIE SCREENING: SPREAD THE WORD!!!!
    4.   DWP INDOOR LIGHTING IMPROVEMENT PROJECT: 
    • On Thursday, April 3, Enerpath, acting on behalf of the LADWP, completed the lighting improvement project in our church, St. Joseph Hall and the Rectory. You will notice a remarkable difference in lighting. All the lights in the Nave and Chapel are on dimmers now except the two lights in the Choir loft and entrance to the Nave. If you have questions, please talk to Fr. Vincent. The lighting project was done GRATIS by LADWP [at no cost to our parish].

    5.   PALMS EMERGENCY  PREPAREDNESS PROJECT:
    • The Coalition partners notified us - Palms Emergency Preparedness Coalition [PepC] - this afternoon, that our Plan of Work and our Expenditure Plan for March - June 2014 has been approved. We will sign the contract next week and hopefully a check should be in the mail sometime soon after that to fund our coalition's activities.

    3.  MAX MEA CULPA - from Rebecca Merwin, Parish Administrator:
    • Regarding the Gala Italian Dinner and Dance April 26 for SAVES Food Bank...... In the notice in last Sunday's [March 23] bulletin, not only did I move the church to a different city but changed its denomination as well.  The Taste of Italy" Dinner and Dance is being held at St. Augustine CATHOLIC Church, 3850 Jasmine Ave,.Culver City. Call 310-838-2702 for more information and reservation. Please, do attend! This event helps to fund S.A.V.E.S the only Food Bank in the Culver City-Palms area.  
    4.    LENTEN/COMMUNITY MOVIE SCREENING: SPREAD THE WORD!!!! 5.   PALMS EMERGENCY  PREPAREDNESS PROJECT:
    • Do you have a personal plan to deal with emergency in your house or area? Does your plan include helping out your neighbor? Do you want to know how to put a plan together? Or find out what emergency resources are available in your community? Volunteers still needed to help our community pull together a coalition for emergency preparedness in Palms. Talk to Fr. Vincent or come to the next Palms Emergency Preparedness Coalition meeting.

    Parish UPDATE: March 23

    1THIS WEEK AT ST. MARY - SUNDAY, MARCH 23:

    3.  THANK YOU:
    • The kitchen sink was replaced last Saturday, March 15 thanks to all who helped us raise the money and provided free labor. All that is left now is to buy a butcher block countertop to cover the hole left by the removal of the old and faithful dishwasher. We have enough money to do this project and work will be done in the coming week. Again, thanks to all for making the kitchen sink project possible. 
    4.    LENTEN/COMMUNITY MOVIE SCREENING: SPREAD THE WORD!!!! 5.   PALMS EMERGENCY  PREPAREDNESS PROJECT:
    • Our parish was invited by the Los Angeles County Community Disaster Resilience project (LACCDR) to help establish a Community Coalition for Emergency Preparedness in Palms. Our first community meeting on Saturday, March 15 went very well. Our next meeting is Saturday, March 22 from 1 - 3 pm. Join us to develop preparedness plans to make our community safe in case of any emergency. We'll meet in St. Joseph Hall.
    6.  TRADING LAWN FOR DROUGHT TOLERANT PLANTS
    • We got approval March 20, from the LADWP to proceed with replacing the lawn in our parkway - 3200 sq. ft of space - with drought tolerant plants. The DWP will give us a rebate of $2 per sq. ft. of lawn we replace for a total rebate of $6400 if we use all 3200 sq. ft. This has been in the works for some time now. Vestry has already given approval for this project.
    • Next we will get a waiver from the City Engineer's office, plans approved and then work will start. 
    • We are doing our part to reduce our carbon footprints. Join us in this project.
